If you are planning on taking a vacation, and your parents rely on you considerably, you may feel a little bit torn. You are probably well aware of the fact that you need a break, and you are excited for your travels. However, you may feel worried about leaving your parents, and you may even feel a little bit guilty too. This is understandable, but you need to look after yourself, and your parents will probably want you to have a bit of ‘you time.’ If you are planning on going on holiday and you’re worried about leaving your aging parents behind, here are some tips to help you out.

Talk with friends and family beforehand – One of the most important things you need to do is have a chat with any friends or family members that live nearby and can chip in while you are away on your travels. Tell them that you are worried about your parent, and explain why. Perhaps it’s loneliness? Or maybe you are worried that they will not be able to do certain things for themselves? Speak to your close friends and family members and find out whether someone can take over from you while you are away. You could even set up a schedule so you know that someone is going to be there every day for your parents’ needs.

Choose your location wisely – If you are worried about being in a different location to your parents, choose somewhere that is fairly nearby. You should also look to find out whether there are flights coming in and out on a daily basis, so it would be easy for you to get back on urgently if required.

Get a local SIM card or make the most of Skype – Nowadays, it does not have to cost a fortune to make calls from international locations. In fact, all you need is an Internet connection and you can do this free of charge using Skype or any other type of video calling service. Nevertheless, there is every chance that Skype may be an alien concept to your parents. If so, buy a local SIM card once you arrive at your destination. You will find that calls are usually much cheaper when using an international SIM.

Talk to your parents – This may sound like an obvious point, but you would be surprised by how many people try to second guess how their parents are feeling or what they need. Talk to your parents. Ask them what they think about you going away for a week or so. Ask them what they need. Ask them if they have any preference regarding who is going to keep a watchful eye over them while you are gone. After all, it is easy to put provisions in place that will put you at ease and make you feel assured, but it is your parent’s well-being and day-to-day life at the end of the day, so they should really have a say!

Invest in a mobile medical alert system – Medical alert systems are just one of the many amazing technological advancements that have occurred over the past few years. There are many amazing solutions available, including the ATC Alert system. This enables your parents to live independently in their home while giving you the peace of mind that they will be quickly attended to should something go wrong. So, how do these systems work? Well, as soon as the button is pressed, the alarm will connect to a monitoring center. The center will then ensure that medical help is with you, at your exact location, as soon as possible. So, while you’re not about to ring the doctor, all your parents need to do is press a button. You are likely to find that this is something worth having in your parents’ home whether you are on your travels or not. It can give them a great sense of independence.

It is all about planning – As you may have gathered already, the key to going on holiday and making sure your parents are fine is to plan. You need to sit down and assess your parents’ weekly needs. What is it that you do for them? This will enable you to establish what is going to be missing while you are not there. You can then put steps in place to account for this. For example, if you cook dinner for your parents every evening, you could organise for a meals on wheels service to be delivered while you are away on holiday.

Go easy on yourself – Last but not least, give yourself a break. You have probably got the weight of the world on your shoulders right now. If you feel guilty for wanting to go on holiday, don’t. If you feel like you should cancel your vacation, don’t. You need to look after yourself too. If you don’t get a break, anxiety and frustration can build up. This isn’t only bad for you, but it is not good for your parents either. So, recognise that you want, need, and deserve a break, and don’t punish yourself for it.

As you can see, there are many different ways you can make sure your parents are cared for while you are out of the country. Plus, with technology these days, you can talk to your parents as much as you want to. It is a lot easier to look out for someone from a different country due to all of the advancements that are available, so simply follow the steps that have been presented and make sure you have an amazing vacation. After all, you are going to be of much more use to your parents if you are refreshed.
