Meet Mia, my 10 weeks old kitten! [Plus, open to any new kitten advices!]

June 5, 2013

Guess what?!

As of last night, I got myself a 10 weeks old kitten!

For the past few weeks, I’ve always wanted a kitten.. and to be honest, I don’t know why. Some of you know that I have a 7 years old Maltipoo named Summer.

Mia! She was named after Mia from the Fast and Furious  series!
As suggested by my friend.

I didn’t want to spend a lot of money (unemployed!! ugh…) so I was searching for kittens on Craigslist and Kijiji to adopt for a relatively cheap price. Unsatisfied, I put up an ad seeking cheap kitten and a girl named Sherri answered me… giving away her kitten for free!

(A lot of you probably think it’s a scam)

Regardless, I messaged back and asked for details and pictures. Unfortunately she doesn’t know the breed of her kitten (it’s a mixed breed) but she told me she is 10 weeks old. She received it from her nephew’s litter but unfortunately her one year old adult cat doesn’t get along with the kitten.

She was kind enough to drop it off last night after she got off. Best of all, aside from the free kitten, she also gave me her toys, bed, food and scratch post for free!

She cried … or at least I think she was crying, it was a lot of whimpering this morning. She does it occasionally now, not as much as this morning. I allowed her to explore the entire house to familiarize herself with the setting.

As for getting along with Summer… well, Summer has been trained to get along with cats. Mia, because she’s a newborn of course doesn’t recognize dogs yet. I’ve been researching online how to get these two to get along… a lot of them said to give them time to let them sniff each other and get use to the scents. So far, that’s what I’ve been doing all day today and hopefully they will pick up quickly. I also make Mia sleep with one of Summer’s blankets so she’ll pick up the scent faster too.

Also, I’ve noticed that she always has this low growl whenever I pet her or hold her and then I realized (a few people suggested it online, I have yet to receive an answer from my friends) that Mia doesn’t recognize me yet so she’s growling and protecting herself (if I pet or hold her too long, her teeth comes out followed by her claws). I hope they’re right because I really want to hold Mia!

Can’t forget about Summer, can we? She never smiles…
Another cute photo of Mia!

Cat owners, any suggestions on how to take care of her and/or training her on having a healthy relationship with Summer? 😀

  1. Aww, Mia is very cute! I don't think it's unusual that people give away kittens for free.. there are so many kittens after all ^^ I think the best way to let her get used to you and your dog is to let her do things at her own pace and don't force anything. If she doesn't want to be held yet, I would just start by petting her shortly from time to time ^^
